The Buddhist Peace Fellowship is hiring a Director of Development to lead fundraising and resource management for our individual donor-funded organization.

The Director of Development will join other Co-Directors in leading Buddhist Peace Fellowship to carry out its mission to cultivate compassionate action — accepting the world as it is, and fighting like hell to change it. As part of shared leadership, the Co-Director will participate in the staff collective to complete strategic planning and decision making about how best to carry out administration and program work of BPF. This is a rare opportunity to lead a multi-generational organization in the midst of a radical rebirth, recentering our work in social justice movements to support collective liberation from below.

We’re seeking a resourceful and talented fundraiser to lead our fundraising efforts, who understands the value of cultivating good relationships with nonprofit donors, building systematic approaches to connect with our 5,000+ supporters. The Director of Development will:

• Manage a yearly fundraising plan (calendar, audience segments, metrics)

• Develop messaging for print and online campaigns

• Coordinate mailed appeals (art work, printing, mailing, volunteers)

• Process donations and sending thank-you notes to individual donors

• Support board members in soliciting and tracking major gifts

• Manage donor data in our online donor database

The right candidate will also have skills in resource management & nonprofit operations, and will be able to shoulder increasing responsibility for managing aspects of BPF operations, such as:

• Financial: Budgeting, monthly financial reports via Quickbooks, tracking financial metrics & organizational capacity, yearly taxes

• Personnel: Payroll, benefits

• Time: Support project management for the staff team via excellent calendaring and organizational skills

• Space: Managing storage unit, securing potential new office space, physical & electronic file storage

• Legal: Familiar with nonprofit requirements, record keeping, insurance

Personal Characteristics:

You are deeply committed to building at the intersection of Buddhist teachings and social justice, with a practice of compassion and a sharp political analysis. You work collaboratively as part of a team, and know how to identify and initiate work in self-directed, autonomous ways. You are recognized for your excellent written and verbal communication skills, your ability to think and plan in systematic ways, and your skill at juggling many tasks and deadlines. BPF is a small, dynamic organization. You are comfortable working out of your co-workers’ homes as well as your own, as we do not currently have an office. You have flexibility, enthusiasm, and energy for engaging with changing circumstances.

The position will start at 20 hours/week, preferably based in the San Francisco Bay Area/East Bay. Pay rate is $23/hour, and BPF offers 100% coverage for health insurance, as well as paid time off for vacation, illness, and holidays.
