The People Will Be Free (Palestine)

This photograph by engaged Buddhist Aneeta Mitha, "Nablus, Palestine — The People Will Be Free," will soon become one of BPF's limited-edition 2012 postcards.  It seems fitting that while we were working on creating the postcard today, news arrived that Palestine has been granted observer-state status at the United Nations.

This, of course, is not the end of the struggle.  And statehood itself is not an ultimate goal on which everyone agrees.  But one thing is certain: the people of Palestine will continue to work for freedom from the occupation.  And as scholar Robin D.G. Kelley puts it, President Obama may someday "discover what Lincoln recognized: emancipation had already begun without him, in the development of a rich civil society forged in a bloody war."
