BPF Friends,
Following is some information on a program of Prison Volunteer
Training offered by the Chicago Shambhala Center you may be interested in.
>The Chicago Shambhala Center welcomes Bill Karelis, Dharma teacher
>and president of the Shambhala Prison Community, Feb 2-3, 2007, to
>work with Midwest Buddhist practitioners and others interested in
>the possibilities of social action in the context of Dharma
>practice. The following specific programs will be offered:
>
>Friday, Feb. 2, 7-9 pm Talk: The Mahayana View of Social Action
>Open to All. $10 donation suggested.
>Sat, Feb. 3, 8:30 - 5:00 pm Prison Volunteer Training, Cost: $60 or
>a donation based on ability to pay.
>
>On Friday evening, Mr. Karelis will give a community talk looking at
>how the Buddhadharma and social action intersect and especially the
>Buddhist understanding of how one works in the world.
>
>On Saturday, Mr. Karelis' teaching to potential prison volunteers
>will continue with a full day structured to give participants an
>opportunity to discover their potential, long-term relationship with
>prison volunteer work. One is given a taste of the work, as well as
>the Shambhala Prison Community's experientially evolved
>guidelines. Although presenting Buddhist-derived meditation
>comprises the bulk of the Shambhala Prison Community's work, its
>charter includes any uplifted, humanistic path which could be
>brought into the field of criminal justice and incarceration. The
>Friday evening talk is also an integral part of the program. There
>is no prerequisite to take the training.
>
>Your members may also be interested in our program on Thursday
>evening, Feb. 1, that features two videos about the problems of
>women in prison made by Beyond Media Education and a discussion with
>Bill Karelis and those involved in creating the films. VOICES IN
>TIME is a window into the lives of women who have served time in
>prison. Women share their experiences before, in, and after prison.
>In WHAT WE LEAVE BEHIND: A VISIBLE VOICES VIDEO, female ex-prisoners
>use personal stories, poetry, group discussions and on-the-street
>interviews to analyze the issues of women in prison and the impact
>on their children. Suggested donation $10. Presented with Beyond
>Media Education, a Rogers Park organization that creates &
>distributes alternative media and arts that help women, youth and
>communities tell their stories and seek social justice.
>
>Bill Karelis taught for many years in the MA program in
>Contemplative Psychology at Naropa University, Boulder, CO. He has
>presented the Buddhadharma and the Shambhala teachings extensively
>in North America and Europe for the last twelve years. He is the
>Executive Director of the Shambhala Prison Community, which he
>founded in 1996, to propagate education in the prison environment,
>in particular the insights of meditation.
