I'm sending you this message because I just urged Congress to block the unauthorized construction of a "legal compound" for the trial of Guantanamo detainees that could cost up to $125 million.  The Department of Defense is moving forward under emergency measures to build the compound without submitting their request to Congress.

Building this compound is a terrible idea and a huge waste of taxpayer money.  And there is a decent change the contract will be awarded to a subsidiary of Halliburton that just recently paid $8 million to settle an overcharging claim by the Army on a separate project.  There already is a courtroom at Guantanamo Bay.  And challenges to the Military Commissions Act, which has numerous legal problems, are only beginning.  

What’s the point in building a massive courthouse in Guantanamo when the law for conducting the trials will likely end up invalidated as unconstitutional?

I hope you'll write your Members of Congress about this important issue.
